The innovations and advancements in the science and technology are enabling the doctors to transplant various organs of human beings. The transplantation of some sensitive organs like heart, liver and skull is a bit rare.

The doctors at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre and Houston Methodist Hospital have successfully transplanted the skull-scalp of 55-year-old James Boysen under the leadership of Dr Michael Klebuc.

The Austin man had wound on his head due from cancer treatment, which was covered by these doctors through a very complex microvascular procedure on May 22. The 15-hour operation was really a breakthrough in the medical technology.

The patient earlier had a kidney-pancreas transplant in 1992 to treat the diabetes what he had since five years of his age. Part of his head was destroyed due to radiation therapy and suppression drugs have weakened his recovering process which also failed the transplanted organs.

The software developer (patient) also got new kidney and pancreas alongside with the craniofacial tissue transplant at Houston Methodist Hospital. Doctors have shown a photograph of Boysen, where we can see him with sutures in a ring around the top of his head.

The missing skull bone was replaced along with the nutrient blood vessels, and the bone has started some early sensation, which is a great thing. According to the doctors’ claim, nowhere this kind of triple transplantation or individual ‘skull and the scalp’ replacement has taken place.

“I’m amazed at how great I feel and am forever grateful that I have another chance to get back to doing the things I love and be with the people I love,” Boysen said after the surgery.
