According to a research, red wine as well as peanuts contains very useful anti-oxidant elements called resveratrol, which is capable of stabilizing the aging brains.

Resveratrol protects cells against damage and helps prevent age-related memory decline, also mops up chemicals responsible for causing blood clots - the primary cause of coronary disease.

Dr. Ashok Shetty, who obtained his PhD degree in neuroscience from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1990, a professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, said the results of the study were striking.

As per their observation on the development and growth of neurons, that is approximately double in the rats given resveratrol compared to the control rats. He noted that both spatial learning and memory improved in the resveratrol-treated rats.

The study on the development and growth of neurons, said that resveratrol might be able to help people affected with severe neurodegenerative conditions, low memory such as Alzheimer's disease.

Shetty, said the study provides evidence that resveratrol treatment in late middle age can help improve memory and mood function in old age.

The study has been published in the journal Scientific Reports.
