A 23-year-old IT professional from Coimbatore bled to death after he jumped from the third floor of Express Avenue Mall in Royapettah in Chennai on Monday.

Identified as D Shanmugham, a program analyst with Cognizant Technology Solutions for the past one-and-a-half years, he had come to Chennai for a training session on Monday. He suffered multiple head injuries that led to his death.

Onlookers affirmed that Shanmugham jumped from the top of an escalator and came crashing on to the ground. He lied unattended in a pool of blood for about 15 minutes before he was rushed to the hospital by some shoppers where he was declared 'brought dead'.

Police revealed that minutes before he committed suicide, Shanmugham texted his friends touting them of his extreme step.

“Before jumping, he deleted close to 9,000 messages and 198 phone numbers from his cellphone. He, however, retained the number of his father and a friend, identified as GV,” revealed a police officer.

“We think he came to the mall to meet somebody. He had done his shopping and had two chocolates in his bag,”  added another senior police officer.

The deceased's body was sent for postmortem to the Government Royapettah Hospital. A case   was filed by the Anna Salai police under Section 174 of IPC.  Unrequited love is being held as the reason for the suicide.
