Arizona Woman arrested on suspicion of terrorism!

A Phoenix-area woman has been arrested by the law-enforcement agents on suspicion of conspiracy to commit terrorism, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office said.

According to Mia Garcia, an Arizona Attorney General's Office spokeswoman, the agents from the Arizona Attorney General's Office and the Phoenix office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation served two search warrants in Chandler and Florence.

Garcia said that, Michelle Bastian was arrested. The law-enforcement activity was evident at Urban Oven, a locally owned bakery in the 2400 block of North Arizona Avenue in Chandler.

The investigation was continuing, and no further information was available, Garcia said.

This is the second prosecution of a state-level terrorism charge in Arizona. Earlier, Mahin Atif Khan pleaded guilty to terrorism, conspiracy to commit terrorism, and conspiracy to commit misconduct Involving weapons, court records show.

Attorney General Mark Brnovich said in a statement announcing Khan's guilty plea, that, “The Attorney General's Office is working very closely with the FBI to arrest and prosecute anyone plotting or planning a terrorist attack in our community."  “We need to stop these homegrown terrorist plots before innocent lives are lost.”

Unlike federal laws, Arizona statutes do not require an “overt act” to prove terrorism conspiracy, Brnovich said.

“If you look at what’s happened in San Bernardino and then in Orlando (attacks), I think that everyone recognizes that no one can do this alone,” Brnovich said in July, speaking about terrorism cases in general.

“Especially in light of the fact that we see these lone-wolf or small terror cells operating in other parts of the world  this is a problem where you’re going to need state, local and federal officials working together.”
