Be aware of ‘Can You Hear Me’ Scam in Arizona

A scam that can make you a victim with one simple word and it has officially made its way to Arizona.

According to the reports from the attorney general's office “Can you hear me?” phone scam has been coming in the last few days.

Arizonans should be aware.

Here is how the scam works:

You get a call from an unknown number, where a person or a recording will ask if you can hear them. There could be static and disturbance on the line and they might reference trouble with their headset or some other reason.

DO NOT answer "Yes."

The goal of the scammer is to get you answer the call and if you do, then they will use your recorded response to place unauthorized charges on phone, utility, or credit card bills.

The AG’s office said that those who are reporting the calls said that the calls appear to come from a local number.

AG Mark Brnovich said it was a new twist on an old scam and must put an end to it immediately. "Answering 'Yes' to any question, scammers ask can later be used to make it sound as though you authorized a major purchase.”

There are the tips to avoid this scam

• Hang up the call and if you do not recognize the number, let it go to voicemail.

• Do not reply or interact in any way.

• Do not talk to a live person; this could lead to more calls

• Do not give details if asked for your personal information

• Check your utility bill and your bank and credit card statements regularly and report suspicious charges immediately.

If someone or their friends and family believe that they have been a victim of this scam.

File a complaint online or contact the Attorney General’s Office in Phoenix at 602-542-5763, in Tucson at -520-628-6648, or outside the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas at 800-352-8431.
