Honest IAS’s officer’s fight against Food adulteration in Kerala

The Food industry is one of the biggest “cash cows” with millions of consumers every day. But, the food industry is being plagued with the blatant corruption of adulteration. Almost every processed food that’s out there is adulterated in one degree or another.

Honestly, do surprise raids help? The officials are with fed tummy full of money by the manufacturers and everything goes back to normal.

But, one brave IAS officer of Kerala decided to change the trend and did something that none of her colleagues have done all over the nation.

The Food Safety Commissioner of Kerala, TV Anupama collected over 6000 samples of adulterated food during her random checks all over the state.

Out of those 6000 samples, 750 of them contained dangerous adulterations. As per the law, they were penalized.

More than 300 times of pesticide than the permissible limits was found in the samples of fruits and vegetables.

Not only had she taken this bold step. But, she also encouraged the people to grow their own vegetables. As a result, nearly 70% of Kerala now grows its own vegetables. Before the awareness Kerala used to import 70% of their vegetables from Tamil Nadu.

“WE WERE ONLY A PART OF IT. WE SPOKE ABOUT IT, PRESENTED IN THE MEETINGS ABOUT IT BUT REST WAS DONE BY THE GOVERNMENT OR PUBLIC.”

Because of the officer, today Kerala people consume a good quality of food. She had the courage to stand up against those termites in the food industry. The Government also deserves the credit for placing their faith in the young IAS officer.

It’s a two-way street. We need to put our faith in our civil servants, and in turn, they should do honest work that improves the quality of the people they serve.

The 2012 batch TV Anupama is one of the best brilliant examples in our country right now, that if a person believes it and works hard and be honest, the person can bring change.
