Indian-American to lead MIT School of Engineer

An Indian-American professor, Anantha Chandrakasan has been selected as the dean of  Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) School of Engineering.

The Vannevar Bush Professor and head of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at MIT and will succeed Ian Waitz on 1 July, who will become the Vice-Chancellor of MIT.

During his six-year term as the EECS, he initiated several initiatives for college students, including post-docs.

Most initiatives were developed with students' input.

−Advanced Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (SuperUROP) Rising Stars (annual event for graduate/post-doc women)

−Postdoc6 (for developing skills)

−StartMIT (an opportunity to learn from and interact with industry leaders).

Chandrakasan was born in Chennai and always wanted to be an engineer and a professor.

He moved to the United State in high school and later earned his BS in 1989, MS in 1990 and Ph.D. in 1994 from University of California. He joined the MIT faculty in 1994.

He established a significant research body for making energy efficient electronic circuits.

His contribution on low-power chips helped in developing smartphones and revolutionized the smartphone technology.

The MIT, considered one of the most decorated and valuable universities in the world, President L. Rafael Reif sate "Anantha balances his intellectual creativity and infectious energy with a remarkable ability to deeply listen to, learn from, and integrate other people's views into a compelling vision."

MIT Provost Martin Schmidt said Chandrakasan is innovative and people-centered and is excited for the opportunities the new dean will create.

Chandrakasan received several awards throughout the years.

−Semiconductor Industry Association University Researcher Award (2009)

− IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits (2013)

He is also the author of most number of publication in the sixty years history of IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference.
