Telecom industry loses 20% revenue due to Jio February 18, 2017 16:36

The telecom industry in India has lost about 20% of revenue due to Reliance Jio’s free service, according to India Rating and Research (Ind-Ra) a Fitch group company has said, revising the sectoral outlook for 2017-18, Ind-Ra said the revision of the outlook on the sector to negative for 2017-18 from stable-to-negative for 2016-17 is due to “increasing competition”. Its latest report on corporate outlook said “The negative outlook reflects Ind-Ra’s expectation of longer and deeper than expected deterioration in the credit profile of telecoms following the extended free services by Reliance Jio Infocomm. The report further added that the industry has lost about 20% revenues due to the Reliance Jio’s offer. ““The existing telecoms would lose market share to Reliance Jio and suffer profitability while the debt burden will increase due to spectrum and network-related capital expenditure.” Despite of the high volumes, decrease in data tariffs will hugely pull down the average revenue per user while voice revenue remains at risk due to Reliance Jio’s pricing strategy after its offer period ends. “A decline in data tariffs by 20-30 per cent will pull down average revenue per user “the report said. On September 5th last year Reliance launched its telecom service, offering consumers free services. Just before its 90 day welcome offer. The company announced that it has extended its offer to further three months The incumbent operators have alleged that the Reliance’s free offer is affecting the whole telecom industry. Bharti Airtel country’s largest telecom service reported its lowest profit in four years in the third quarter of 2016-17 as demonetization and intense completion from incoming from the Jio hit its revenue. The report also said the free cash flows will be negative due to the double whammy of weaker earnings and apex. Amul Celebrates Isro’s success in its own way AMandeep

Indian-origin Chancellor rejected Chinese student groups call not to call Dalai Lama February 18, 2017 09:59

A University in California headed by an Indian-origin academician has turn downed a call by Chinese students to withdraw an invitation to exiled leader of Tibet ‘Dalai Lama’, but assured them that his speech would have nothing to do with politics. Pradeep K Khosla the Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) met with three Chinese overseas student groups: The Chinese Union, Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) and the Chinese Business Society. In the meeting the University declined the Chinese overseas students to withdraw the invitation of the spiritual leader for a graduation speech in June this year, but assured them that his speech would not have anything to do with politics. Fan Da member of Chinese Union said that the University would not disinvite Dalai Lama, but they will stop describing him as ‘freedom fighter’ and spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people. K Khosla promised that the Dalai Lama would not include any political content in his speech and the university would soon publish a notice about the issue. Fan said that when they asked the Chancellor if he knew that the invitation to the Dalai Lama hurt the Chinese student’s feelings, the Chancellor said that he only knew that he was only a ‘religious activist’ but Chancellor had no idea what he did. It is not clear what actions Chinese groups would take to continue their protest, he said. An article in the paper said "By calling the Dalai Lama "the exiled spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people" and "a man of peace," the University has shown admiration for the Dalai Lama. Earlier this month the University announced that it has invited the 14th Dalai Lama to give a keynote the All Campus Commencement on 17th June, and a speech on 16th June at a public event. UCSD described the Dalai Lama, as "the exiled spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people" in the announcement. Narendra Modi to meet Donald Trump in May AMandeep
