Gas Prices in Arizona reach 2017 High April 22, 2017 15:39

Gasoline prices in Arizona had reached its peak height this year. The average prices in Arizona on Thursday (April 20) increased 2.6 cents to $2.30 per gallon. However, it is still lower than the national average gas price, which is $2.41 per gallon, said AAA Arizona. The average gas price in Phoenix was $2.25, a little below the state average. The surrounding varied from there, with southeast Valley at $2.23 and Scottsdale at $2.32. Flagstaff has the highest average fuel price at $2.51 per gallon, while Tucson has the lowest average gas price at $2.19. "In addition to more expensive summer-blend gasoline and increased driving demand, this week’s price increase is being fueled by a lift in oil prices," said Michelle Donati, spokeswoman for AAA Arizona. Unfortunately the prices will not be going down anytime soon. "Given current market factors, AAA is expecting Arizona gas prices to continue to increase," Donati said. "We are anticipating prices to peak sometime in May or June." Rachel Overpeck, who is a resident of Tempe said that she drives every day and would consider using transportation if the gas prices continue to rise. "It's a little bit of a nightmare," said Overpeck. "It affects my wallet, my spending money. I fill up my tank usually at least once a week, so it's about 25 dollars each time and it's getting to be more." Another resident of Tempe, Heather Curry said that she works in Phoenix and uses public transportation every day. "I prefer it. Even if gas prices were $1.20, I would probably take the light rail just because it's easier and I can get work done," she said. Jared Johnson of Phoenix said that he drives about 480 kilometers a week and has to fill up his car weekly. "I've been going to places that offer discounts with a Fry's card or something like that,'' Johnson said.”I filled up (Thursday) and I got 10 cents off per gallon, so it took quite a bit off." Supreme Court to scan the linkage of Aadhaar and PAN Cards April 22, 2017 13:55

The Aadhaar card was made mandatory for income tax returns, provident funds, bank accounts and filing PAN cards under the Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, which was introduced by the Finance Act 2017. The Supreme Court of India said that it would scrutinize the validity of the Central Government’s decision to make Aadhaar card mandatory for PAN cards and for filing income tax returns and sought a clarification from the government. A bench of Justices Arjan Kumar Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked the government why the Aadhaar was made compulsory when the apex court in its order made it clear that it could only be made optional. The bench said that it will scrutinize the issue whether the decision was valid or not in light of its interim order that said Aadhaar could be stipulated only for welfare benefits. “Is this the remedy? Forcing people to get Aadhaar cards?” Justice A.K. Sikri orally addressed Attorney-General of India Mukul Rohatgi. Mr. Rohatgi said that people were obtaining multiple PAN cards, which were used to “divert funds” to shell firms and linking to Aadhaar will curb such practices. "There is a legislative mandate now. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act says so. It is the only option as we have found that people were getting PAN cards on fake ration cards and such PANs were used to divert funds to shell companies," he said. The court is hearing petitions filed by the former Kerala minister, Binoy Viswam and S.G. Vombatkere a former Army officer challenging the amendment in the I-T Act making it mandatory to quote the Aadhaar card in filing income tax returns. Arivnd Datar, who is a senior advocate appearing for the petitioner, alleged that the amendment is extremely harsh and should not be allowed. He said that the amendment made it compulsory for people to provide their unique Aadhaar number and if one fails to do so then the PAN card would become void. However, Rohatgi justified the government’s decision and said that there is nothing wrong in linking Aadhaar card with PAN card. He added that Supreme Court itself agreed to make Aadhaar card compulsory in certain fields to protect identity and national security. “You (Supreme Court) yourself had recently ordered that Aadhaar should be made mandatory to procure SIM cards,” Mr. Rohatgi contended. The bench adjourned the case, after a brief hearing and posted it to April 26th for final hearing. It was a crucial attempt to link Pan Card with Aadhaar card as people file for multiple PAN cards, which are used to divert funds and the linkage will also curb the flow of black money to an extent. Gujarat Lions lords over Kolkata Knight Riders April 22, 2017 13:10

Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina, desperately needed a big knock to stamp his class. It came at Eden Gardens with Kolkata Knight Riders being at the end. Raina single-handedly guided his side to a crucial win over the favorite with a knock of 84 off 46 balls. The four wicket triumph gave the beleaguered Lions a revival shot and lifted them above Pune at the bottom of the table. Suresh Raina came to bat after Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum gave a 42 run stand in just 3.3 overs. Raina took time adjusting to the conditions before exploding. He smashed both spinners and pacers. Earlier, Sunil Narine once again gave Kolkata a flying start as he walked out with skipper Gautam Gambhir to open the innings after Gujarat won the toss and elected to field first. Narine, who scored 37 off 18 balls against Kings XI Punjab gave an improved performance, smashing nine boundaries and one six, scoring 42 off 17 balls. Rattled by Narine’s rage, Raina brought himself on and succeeded in tricking the Caribbean into miscuing a shot to Faulkner at mid-on. However, there was no rest for the visiting side as Gambhir and Robin Uthappa continued in the same vein. Raina tried out seven bowlers in the first nine overs of the innings to stop the flow of runs, but the strategy failed as the Kolkata duo took the score to 100 in the 11th over. Gujarat bowling was trembling and greatly regretting their decision to leave their most successful bowler, Tye. To add to their woes, their fielders often fumbled and gave away extra runs, including over-throws. After Gambhir’s dismissal Uthapa powered on, as he went on to score 72 off 48 balls and completed his second half-century of the season. Manish Pandey, who was the hero of Kolkata’s win over Delhi, failed to raise the tempo. His 24 off 21 balls meant the home fell well short of the 200 mark. - AMandeep

India makes fresh request for extradition of David Headley, Rana April 21, 2017 11:24

India has made a fresh request to the USA for extradition of David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Rana, for the involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Andrew McCabe visited India earlier this month to meet the officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The NIA is probing the conspiracy behind the terror 2008 attacks in Mumbai; it raised the pending requests for extradition of Headley and Rana with Mr. McCabe. It also said that its multiple requests for the custody of Rana had gone unheeded. Revising its demand, NIA told the FBI that though Rana was convicted by a United States court of providing material to the Lashkar-e-Taiba - the terror group, which was behind the attacks, had not been tried for crimes registered in India – of forgery and criminal breach of trust. The double ‘jeopardy law’ clause in the US law prevents punishment for the same offense twice. So, in 2016 India demanded Rana’s extradition on the grounds of planning an attack on the National Defense College and Chabad House (Jewish centers) in several cities. A senior official of the Union Home Ministry said: “Since Rana has already been convicted by a U.S court, he cannot be tried for the same crime twice. We told the FBI official that we also have a case of forgery and criminal breach of trust registered against him, and he has not been tried for these crimes.” Mr. McCabe assured the NIA that it would look into the matter. A US court sentenced Headly to 35 years in prison, and NIA thinks that they have a case because his conviction was made only on the basis of the six Americans, who were killed in the 26/11 attack. Several Indians were also killed and for this, Headley is still to face the law. Rana, who is a school friend of Headley, is currently serving a 14 year term in the United States for providing material support to the terrorist group LeT. According to the FBI, Headley visited India again in March 2009 for reconnaissance of the NDC in Delhi and Jewish Centers. Supreme Court suggests proceedings against BJP Leaders AMandeep

Mumbai Indians conquer Kings XI Punjab April 21, 2017 10:44

Mumbai Indians on rampage conquered Kings XI Punjab at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore with a spectacular chase to win their consecutive match of the tournament by a comfortable eight wickets. Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and put Punjab in to bat first, deciding to go with the tournament of chasing so far. After all, 12 victories this season have come for teams batting second. Batting first, Punjab had set a target of 198/4, still 20 runs less than what Mumbai Indian’s bowling coach Shane Bond had predicted on this pitch. A grand century from a composed Hashim Amla, it was the kind of innings that, every once in a while, can end up unmasking the monstrosity of the very format. In the last five overs of the innings, Kings XI almost made Sharma’s decision look like a bad one. In the absence of Manan Vohra, who was unwell and had to be rested, Punjab brought in Shaun Marsh, who started off well. Between 6th and 9th over, Kings XI did not have a single boundary. It was only after the fall of Wriddhiman Saha's wicket that the Amla-Maxwell duo blossomed and spiked the run flow. Exactly 50 runs were scored in the 15th and 16th over with Maxwell taking 28 off McClenaghan and then Amla hammering Malinga for 22. It took an exceptional effort from Mumbai Indian’s most reliable bowler, Jasprit Bumrah to stem the rot. He sent Maxwell back to the dressing room. But Amla’s century went in vain; as Mumbai’s four batsmen chased the mammoth score that to within 15.3 overs. It was not supposed to look this easy for Mumbai, but Nitish Rana joined hands with opener Jos Butler to make the result look extremely one sided. AMandeep

More Than 5000 Immigrants Deported From Arizona April 20, 2017 13:03

According to a data from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement more than 5,000 illegal immigrants were removed from Arizona in the first three months of this year. ICE stated that 5,283 illegal immigrants were removed as of March 31st. It said 1,780 were removed in January, followed by 1,613 in February and 1,890 in the month of March.  The figures included those, who were removed forcibly, those who voluntarily deported and those, who were deported by the Border Patrol. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not specify the nationality of any person, who was deported or if anyone had been removed more than one time. Local news in Arizona has requested last year’s removal numbers. The ICE is looking into the request. In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that made all illegal immigrants (regardless of the crime) the focus of deportation efforts. Shortly after the order was signed, Arizona made the immigration headlines, when two undocumented immigrants convicted of a crime. Juan Carlos Fomperosa Garcia and Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos were detained and deported following routine check-ins with ICE. “Fugitives, who commit egregious crimes in their home country should not expect to find refuge in the United States.,” said Henry Lucero, who is the field office director for ICE in Phoenix. He said this in a release about the arrest and deportation of Juan Garica-Rendon, who was the main suspect in a murder in Mexico. The arrests of undocumented people garnered controversy among pro-immigration groups, who said that the families were splitting up due to the deportations and were not for the public good.
