An Indian American Urologist Helps Deliver Baby In An International Flight January 19, 2018 15:27

An Indian American Urologist Dr Sij Hemal was not expecting a Gynaec role on his flight from Paris to JFK when a co-passenger on the Air France international flight went into labor, a week ahead of plan. Sij was traveling on a long-haul multi flight journey from New Delhi in India to Cleveland, OH in the US with flight changes at Paris and JFK New York. He was already half way his journey and tired when he was asked by flight attendants for help. As this second-year urology resident at Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute had spent his entire day traveling. This 27 year old Urologist had planned to have a glass of champagne and watch “Side effects” to spend the journey and fall asleep. “I was pretty tired from jet lag,” he stated. He boarded the flight soon after attending his best friend’s wedding in India. But destiny had other plans, even before he could enjoy his bubbly he was called for an emergency on flight. A flight attendant was looking for doctors on board when Sij went ahead to offer his help. There was a Nigerian Banker Toyin Ogyndipe, 41 and a mother of two kids, who was uneasy with chest pain and feeling dizziness. The plane was then flying over the southern coast of Greenland and making an emergency landing would require a two hour diversion to a U.S. military base in the Azores Island. Also the flight was still 4 plus hours away from JFK. 'She was covered with a blanket so I couldn't see that she was pregnant, but the pain she was describing sounded like contractions,' he said.  "She was complaining of back pain," Hemal told. "At first, I thought it might be kidney stones, but after she told me she was pregnant, I knew she was going into labor." 'My initial plan was to monitor her and her vitals but we did a cervical exam and that's when her water broke,' he said.  "Once they got to two minutes apart, that's when we knew we were going to deliver on the plane," Hemal said."I was pretty tired from jet lag," Dr. Hemal recalled in a post on Cleveland Clinic's website. "I thought I'd just have a drink and fall asleep. As it turned out, I'm glad I didn't drink anything." And as coincidence has it, he was seated next to a French pediatrician, both of whom helped in delivering the child. “Her contractions were about 10 minutes apart, so the pediatrician and I began to monitor her vital signs and keep her comfortable,” explains Dr. Hemal. Using the Air France flight's medical supplies to monitor vitals and contractions, Dr Hemal and the Pediatrician Dr. Susan Shepherd, of Senlis, France helped Toyin safely deliver a baby boy, after almost 30 minutes of pushing.                        Image credit: cbsnews.comSince they all had a coach ticket, the doctors suggested the patient be moved to First class with less passengers and more room for the delivery. “My ticket to first class!” he stated as a joke. Toyin was accompanied by her 4 year old daughter Amy who was tended by air hostesses on flight. And the second child was delivered healthy and safely.Although Sij is a Urologit but he did deliver 7 babies while in medical school. But no experience of doing in the situation he actually did. “We’re trained to stay calm and think clearly in emergency situations,” he adds. “I just tried to think ahead to what might go wrong, and come up with a creative solution.”He used surgical clamp and a shoe string to tie the umbilical cord and cut it with scissors later.Toyin was relaxed throughout her delivery and she stated, “I was relaxed because I knew I was in safe hands. They did everything a doctor or midwife would have done if I was in the labor room in the hospital. Even better, if you ask me.” She names her newborn son, Jake who gets US citizenship as they were flying over US airspace when the child was delivered. Jake was normal and he soon began nursing within a few hours. Upon landing at JFK Toyin and her baby was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Centre which is 4 miles from the airport. The mother and child were discharged later that day.Sij still had the last leg of his journey to Cleveland and he is in touch with Toyin regarding the health of the baby. “So much could have gone wrong, but it didn’t. Being on that particular flight, sitting next to a pediatrician … it’s like it was destiny,” said Dr. Hemal. “Thanks to God, everything worked out.” 'I’m very thankful for the great training we get at the Cleveland Clinic that has prepared us for emergencies and to anticipate the worst and be prepared and make the best out of situations,' he said.By Minu Manisha

Aziz Ansari; Is He Or Is He Not Guilty Of The Sexual Assault Charges January 17, 2018 17:36

The world is picking sides and clearly there is a benefit of doubt involved (for both the parties, and not) when we read the tabloid details on Aziz Ansari and Grace’s unfortunate sexual encounter. Just when the world was going gaga over the Oscar spree of Ansari, the news started rolling in, of an unfortunate date he had in Manhattan, in Sept 2017; which ended up causing discomfort and sexual assault for the female who goes by the name Grace in media and meant completely consensual act for Ansari. Was it a bad date, was it consensual, were his intentions wrong, is she seeking media attention or was it a sexual assault really? None is yet confirmed and while the world takes sides; there is a clear case of mis-communication here. ‘Master of None’ star took to social media to express his regret and still went ahead to state that the act in his opinion was a consensual one. Ansari dated the woman back in 2017 and as stated at the babe.net website; Grace (the pseudonym of the female) a 23 year old woman whom Ansari met and got carried away on a date with some acts which the woman felt violet about. They met in LA and exchanged numbers, Grace was the one who went after him charmed by his success and persona. Then they exchanged few texts and eventually went on a date in Manhattan which took a different path. First they had wine at Ansari’s apartment and then he took her to a fancy restaurant. They both came back to Ansari’s apartment and thats when the incident began. Grace stated the night as, “by far the worst experience with a man I’ve ever had. I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz”. She told she was uncomfortable by the sexual activity soon after their date at Ansari’s apartment and he did not notice her verbal and non verbal clues showing discomfort. He went on trying things which made Grace feel offended. She stated she was pressurized to perform certain acts which she said, “told him [she] was uncomfortable”. She added, “I felt violated. It took a really long time for me to validate this as sexual assault.”Ansari said: “In September of last year, I met a woman at a party. We exchanged numbers. We texted back and forth and eventually went on a date. We went out to dinner and afterwards we ended up engaging in sexual activity, which by all indications was completely consensual. The next day, I got a text from her saying that although ‘it may have seemed OK’, upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable. It was true that everything did seem OK to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said. I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture ... It is necessary and long overdue”The woman’s texts after the unfortunate date night, to Ansari were reported to babe.net by Grace and they read “Last night might’ve been fun for you, but it wasn’t for me. You ignored clear non-verbal cues; you kept going with advances. ou had to have noticed I was uncomfortable … nothing [changed] even after I expressed that I’d like to slow it down”Ansari responded: “I’m so sad to hear this. All I can say is, it would never be my intention to make you or anyone feel the way you described. Clearly, I misread things in the moment and I’m truly sorry.”Grace was compelled after the Golden Globes as Ansari’s award amid all the #metoo movement and Timesup campaign seemed painful for her. “It was actually painful to watch him win and accept an award,” Grace told Babe. “And absolutely cringeworthy that he was wearing the Time’s Up pin.”While nothing can be clearly stated for now, but the way tabloids have covered the entire details, it is as confusing to Ansari as it is to us. For the details on how and why are too complicated for even verbal cues to establish. The only question that comes in mind is, If you are on a date and you end up being at the other person’s apartment the second time on the night, how is it not an idea pressed by the both of you? If sexual assault was the case then, how come Grace kept it to herself until now and only an Oscar win prompted her to speak up against Ansari who wore the Times Up pin. And for Ansari, it sure was a bad date and you certainly could not fulfil what was expected of you. Or you ignored or rather got turned on by the verbal and non verbal clues which meant something else for her. While the media frenzy continues, more news to come in.By Minu Manisha
