External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to the US’ concerns regarding India’s 10-year agreement to operate the Chabahar Port in Iran. Speaking at an event in Kolkata, he stressed that the project will have a positive impact on the entire region and urged people to consider the bigger picture. Jaishankar also noted that the US has previously acknowledged the importance of Chabahar. He acknowledged the US’ recent remarks, but emphasized the need to communicate and convince people of the project’s benefits. The EAM highlighted the US’ positive attitude towards Chabahar in the past and expressed his willingness to work towards a solution.
During a press briefing, Vedant Patel, the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, warned against the potential risk of sanctions for anyone considering business deals with Iran. Patel stressed the importance of being aware of such risks, as US sanctions on Iran remain in place and will continue to be enforced. The signing of the Long-Term Bilateral Contract on Chabahar Port Operation between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Iran was a significant milestone, according to India's Foreign Minister, Jaishankar. He explained that India had a long-standing association with the Chabahar Port Development Project but had been unable to sign a long-term pact due to various issues on the Iranian end, including changes in joint-venture partners and conditions. However, he added that India was now able to sign the agreement, which would benefit the entire region.
He expressed relief, saying, "At last, we resolved the issue and successfully established a long-term agreement. This agreement is crucial, as it is required to enhance the port's efficiency. We are convinced that the improved port operation will have a positive impact on the entire area." The Chabahar Port is a significant joint venture between India and Iran, providing a vital transit point for trade with landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian nations. India's involvement in the project has been instrumental in enhancing the port's infrastructure and transforming it into a feasible transit route for Indian products destined for these regions. The Indian government has made substantial investments in the port's facilities and operations, cementing its position as a crucial player in the development and management of the Chabahar Port.
