Tourism gets pep in budget, Wellness card launched

As India, progresses Tourism become a vital sector that not only brings in huge revenue but also aids in the infrastructure development in the country.

Keeping the nation’s progress linked with tourism, the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, in his presentation of annual Budget 2012 on Friday in the Parliament, earmarked an enhanced allocation of funds for the sector. The sector which had funds of Rs. 1,170 Cr allocated in the last budget has received a hike of 9.5 percent in this year’s budget. The funds allocated for the tourism sector is 1,282 Cr.  Major chunk of the budget allocation will be utilized for the incredible India campaign say authorities. The successful campaign which show cased the most favored destinations of the country since years shall this year get Rs. 348.20 Cr. The campaign boasts of many covet international awards in its stride to better showcase the country.

Domestic tourism will also be given equal importance say sources and the funds to be allotted this fiscal year would be Rs. 81 Cr. The incredible India campaign had attracted many foreign tourists to the country and there was a seemingly increase in the visits over the last few years. In 2010 nearly 5.5 million visited, in 2009, 5.17 million and in 2008, 5.28 million international tourists visited the country.

Another important aspect which got major funds earmarked was the infrastructure facilities, which included constructing budget accommodations, wayside amenities, tourist reception centres, refurbishment of monuments, adventure and sports facilities and illumination of monuments. The funds this sector is allotted is Rs. 548 Cr. The last year Rs.499 Cr was allocated.

Meanwhile a private firm, Prime India, in Chennai has launched the International Wellness card for the benefit of medical tourists from Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Over 150,000 patients visit the country per year. India's medical tourism sector is expected to experience an annual growth rate of ten per cent, making it a Rs 9,500-crore industry by 2015.  (With inputs from internet- AarKay)
