Indian cricket player Arshdeep Singh was penalized 15 percent of his match earnings for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. As stated in the official ICC press announcement, Arshdeep broke Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which pertains to “throwing a ball (or any other piece of cricket gear) at or near a player in an unsuitable and/or risky way during an International Match. ” This incident happened during the 11th over of New Zealand's innings when a throw from the Indian player struck Daryl Mitchell's body. Although emotions ran high for a moment on the field, both players shook hands, and Arshdeep even expressed regret to Mitchell after the game.
Following the match, Arshdeep spoke about the event, explaining that he quickly apologized to Mitchell. The two players were later spotted enjoying a friendly moment and exchanging kind words. “I went to apologize to Mitchell. My throw swung back a bit too much and hit him, so I told him I didn’t mean to hit him on purpose," Arshdeep mentioned during the post-match interview. Regarding the team's confidence throughout the tournament, Arshdeep noted that it stemmed from the number of strong players on the team. “It’s a wonderful team, there are match-winners everywhere in this group, so we believed from the beginning that we would do well, and whatever the outcome is, that’s just the icing on the cake,” he informed the broadcasters after the game.
Even though Arshdeep played a significant part in India's bowling success, he acknowledged that he had not yet fully realized the magnitude of the accomplishment. “I’m not quite sure what the emotion feels like at this moment, sir. Right now it feels good because we are winning, but in two or three days we will understand how it really feels once the emotions settle in.”
