Rishabh Pant has resigned as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants after the team ended at the bottom in IPL 2026. The IPL franchise announced on social media that Pant’s plea to step down from his leadership position was accepted by the management team. LSG had a dreadful season in 2026, managing only 4 wins and finishing last with 8 points from 14 games. Pant's batting wasn't great either, as he made 312 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 138.05. He was purchased for a record Rs 27 crore during the IPL 2025 auction, but since then, LSG ranked seventh and tenth in the following seasons. "The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) formally announces that Rishabh Pant has asked to be relieved of his captaincy responsibilities with the team, and the organization has accepted his request immediately," LSG said in a statement on Friday.

Tom Moody, the Director of Cricket for LSG, mentioned that Pant’s resignation was 'never easy. ' “Rishabh came to us with this request, and we have graciously accepted it. Making these choices is never simple," Moody mentioned in a statement put out by LSG. "We appreciate everything Rishabh has contributed as our captain. Our attention now shifts to working together to rebuild and improve to achieve the highest standards,” he continued. LSG has not yet revealed who will take over as the new captain after Pant. "To ensure a strong comeback in the next season, we will announce the new captain of Lucknow Super Giants in due time,” the franchise stated. During Pant's leadership, LSG won 10 matches but lost 18 over two seasons. As a wicketkeeper batsman, once regarded as one of the top hitters in the nation, he only accumulated 581 runs with a strike rate of 135.74.
