Star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has dismissed the speculation surrounding his return to Test cricket after scoring a century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. This follows reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might discuss a possible return with Kohli. However, in a conversation after the match, the 37-year-old former captain stated that these rumors are not true, and he will only continue playing in one format. "At 37, I need time to recover. That’s how it will always be – I’m just focusing on one kind of cricket. After playing over 300 games and a lot of cricket, you know you have the ability to bat for long periods. As long as I am hitting the ball well and enjoying my game, it’s about being physically fit and mentally prepared," Kohli expressed following the match.
Earlier that day, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also spoke about the rumors regarding Kohli's possible return from retirement. He confirmed that the board has not had any discussions with the player on the matter. "What people are saying about Virat Kohli is merely a rumor. There's been no communication with him about this. Don't pay attention to rumors. Nothing like that has occurred," Devajit Saikia informed India Today. Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year in May, concluding his Test career with 123 matches, 9,230 runs, and 30 centuries at an average of 46.85. Meanwhile, Kohli earned the title 'Man of the Match' as India triumphed over South Africa by 17 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. His score of 135 came off 120 deliveries, and he partnered with Rohit Sharma for a second-wicket partnership of 136, helping India reach a total of 349-8 in Ranchi.
