According to the latest edition of Power On by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple might be planning one of the most significant changes in iPhone design ever. He mentions that the upcoming version could introduce a real transformation in shape, unlike the minor updates we've seen in the past. Previous leaks indicate that the new style might use a book-style foldable design, similar to innovations already seen from other smartphone brands. Earlier reports have also suggested some of its main features. In his newsletter, Gurman explains that although earlier models like the iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and iPhone X had important design changes, the next one, the foldable iPhone, is anticipated to bring about a much more dramatic change. He noted that it is set to be "the most significant overhaul in the iPhone's history. " The journalist shared that he has had a Samsung foldable phone for several years and believes that it offers a more engaging experience for watching videos, gaming, and working, even suggesting it might sometimes replace the need for an iPad.
A new report suggested that the foldable iPhone may feature an interface similar to that of an iPad, complete with apps that can run side by side and app sidebars. It is expected to operate on a 2nm A20 Pro chip paired with Apple's C2 modem. Additionally, it might include dual cameras on both the front and back, along with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button. The foldable iPhone might have a main foldable screen measuring 7.8 inches alongside a 5.5-inch outer display. Apple might use a dual-layer glass design to shield the display from hinge pressure and enhance its durability. There might also be self-healing glass and a revamped hinge to minimize the appearance of creases and make folding smoother. In the US, the price for the foldable iPhone could be $1,999 (about Rs. 1,84,700) for the 256GB model, while in China, it might be set at CNY 15,999 (around Rs. 2,14,400). It may be named the iPhone Ultra, although this name hasn't been officially confirmed yet.
The foldable iPhone might be unveiled in September; however, its sale could start later, potentially in October or beyond. The iPhone 18 Pro series, including the Pro and Pro Max versions, is anticipated to release around the same time. The other iPhone 18 models, like the standard version, Air, and 18e, are expected to launch in the spring of 2027.
