Mohsin Naqvi, who works with both the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is planning to head to Lahore today. His trip comes as the argument over the Asia Cup trophy keeps getting worse. Reports say that Naqvi, who is the president of the ACC, proposed that Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav should go to Dubai to get the trophy in person. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) firmly replied, saying, “He didn’t take the trophy when it was given to him – why would he go now?" At an ACC meeting on Tuesday, Naqvi apologized to the BCCI, admitting that the situation should not have happened like it did. Even after this, he has not given back the trophy or the medals. The BCCI has decided to take serious action in response.
Reports suggest that the board is planning to make a formal complaint to the Dubai Police, accusing Naqvi of stealing and illegally keeping the trophy. The situation is likely to get more intense, with both boards preparing for more issues. Before the Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan, Naqvi apparently shared posts on his social media showing some Pakistani cricketers in flight suits with fighter jets behind them. This was after he had posted an image of Cristiano Ronaldo showing a plane in trouble. Angered by Naqvi's behavior, the Indian team chose not to share the stage with him after winning the Asia Cup title. Naqvi, who is also Pakistan's interior minister, insisted on presenting the trophy and medals himself, thus delaying the awards ceremony until it ended abruptly. He then left the Dubai International Cricket Stadium with the trophy and medals meant for the Indian players, sparking a major controversy.
Suryakumar later expressed his disappointment over the situation. “I have never seen a champion (team) not receiving a trophy. We earned it. The real trophies are my 14 teammates, and they will always be in my memory," Suryakumar Yadav stated during the post-match media session.
