Tesla's CEO Elon Musk cautioned Microsoft head Satya Nadella about OpenAI potentially overwhelming his business – on the same day that the tech company led by Sam Altman launched GPT-5 on its platforms. Nadella remarked, "Today, we are releasing GPT-5 on our systems, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry." He noted, "This is the most advanced model from our collaborators at OpenAI, introducing major improvements in reasoning, coding, and conversation, all developed on Azure." Nadella mentioned that it had only been two and a half years since OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman came to Redmond to present GPT-4 in Bing, and he expressed that the advancements made since then were "amazing." He stated, "The speed of innovation is only increasing, and I'm eager to see what businesses, developers, and users will achieve with this new milestone." Addressing Musk’s comment about "eating Microsoft alive," Nadella responded, "People have been trying for five decades, and that's part of the excitement! Every day offers a new lesson, and brings opportunities to create, partner, and compete. I'm looking forward to Grok 4 on Azure and can't wait for Grok 5!"

Cursor AI, which is an AI-based code editor linked to Visual Studio Code, also announced the integration of GPT-5, labeling it "the smartest coding model our team has assessed" and offering it for free "for now." Musk, who supports the Grok AI platform, mentioned, "However, Grok 4 Heavy is still the most powerful AI." Earlier, Sam Altman expressed feeling "unnecessary" after GPT-5 easily handled a tough email challenge he had difficulties with. While discussing on a podcast, Altman described his reaction as a "strange sensation," observing the speed and accuracy of AI. In testing GPT-5, he admitted he was "nervous" and likened the experience to the Manhattan Project. He referenced physicist Robert Oppenheimer and suggested that GPT-5 might have "long-lasting impacts" on a comparable level, although not in a harmful way. OpenAI released ChatGPT-5 on Thursday free for all users, highlighting "notable" upgrades in AI abilities as the worldwide competition in the field grows. Altman described GPT-5 as "clearly a model that possesses general intelligence" and a "major advancement" towards artificial general intelligence, though it does not yet have the capability to learn continuously. He compared the evolution of the models: GPT-3 seemed like a high school student, GPT-4 was akin to a college student, and GPT-5 resembles a PhD-level expert.

The latest model is particularly skilled at "agent" tasks and "vibe coding," which enables the generation of applications on demand and is intended to be more reliable.
